The Application of Neofunctionalism to the Enlargement Process: The Case of Turkey

Catherine Macmillan

Journal of Common Market Studies, 2009, vol. 47, issue 4, 789-809

Abstract: This article examines Turkey's EU accession process from a neofunctionalist viewpoint in an attempt to understand why it has proceeded so far despite considerable opposition from some of the Member States. It argues that, although neofunctionalist spillover can account for this, the eventual outcome is still far from certain.
