The Economic Mythology of European Integration

Erik Jones

Journal of Common Market Studies, 2010, vol. 48, issue 1, 89-109

Abstract: This article examines the economic myths that surround the process of European integration. It argues that while such myths once played an important role in fostering identification and support for the process, they no longer serve that function. Instead, these economic myths have become a focal point for contestation and concern. Europeans will have to develop a new mythology to explain and justify their process of integration as a result.
