A Generalised Lorenz Curve Approach to Explaining the Upward Movement in Women's Relative Earnings in Britain during the 1970s

Abstract: The earnings of women rose sharply relative to those of men in Britain during the 1970s. As this was contemporaneous with the introduction of equal pay legislation, most previous authors have attributed virtually the whole of the improvement to this legislation. This paper casts doubt on this interpretation by estimating generalised Lorenz curves for male-dominated, femaled-dominated, well-integrated, and nonmixed occupations by industry groups over the period 1970 to 1982 using data tapes from the New Earnings Survey. As the Lorenz curves moved upwards in all cases, this provides circumstantial evidence that forces additional to equal pay must have been present during the period.
