Abstract: Statistics and experiment about the poliomyelitis vaccine Adequate controls to ensure unbiased conclusions form an essential part of clinical experiments. The field trials of S a I k's poliomyelitis vaccine carried out in the U.S. in 1954 are discussed as an example of the need for such controls and the errors that may be introduced when they are omitted or incorrectly devised.
