Abstract:
A queuing problem in connection with measurements of the threshold value of the human eye. In the theory concerning the sensitivity of the eye the probability of perception W of a flash of light is considered as a function of: 1) the energy of the flash N̄ 2) the duration of the flash t 3) the number of quanta k which must be effectively absorbed by the visual purple within a time τ and an area ω in order to perceive light. If the area A of the spot of light on the retina is smaller than ω and t is smaller than τ, this function is simply the cumulative distribution function of a Poisson variable. Here the case A τ is considered. Then the chance W is the solution of a certain queuing problem. In this way formulae for W of van der Velden (cf[I]) and Bouman and van der Velden (cf [3]) for the case k=2 are derived and new results are obtained for the case k=3. A new close approximation method due to dr. Runnenburg of the University of Amsterdam is given for the case k=2.
