Abstract: Data can be divided into right and wrong data, exact and inaccurate data, random and biased data. The most practical division is that into usefull and useless data. The usefullness of data depends upon the situation in which the data are used. Such a situation is mostly a decision situation and can be analysed into a number of decision elements. First of all there is a range of possible choices, there must be some decision purpose, the decision must be based on decision information and finally the decision is made by applying some decision function. We must judge our data in relation to their role of decision information in a decision situation. Sometimes we are able to improve the information, sometimes it is possible to adapt the decision funtion to the value of the information. Various examples are given: errors of measurement in sorting, planning the capacity of a new plant, (minimax principle), decision based upon the result of an experiment (using estimate intervals in stead of statistical significance).
