Abstract:
Optimal length of lines in a telephone directory. There are two sources of loss of space in printing a telephone directory. First, if a reference uses several lines, then space is lost in the “number column”. This loss increases with decreasing length of lines. On the other hand, space is lost when a reference does not cover an integer number of lines. This loss increases with increasing length of lines. By adjusting an exponential distribution to a sample taken from the Amsterdam telephone directory, a length of lines is found which minimizes the sum of both losses.
