Abstract: The evolution of the dentition of the orang‐utan compared with the evolution of the human dentition. From a comparison of the average robustnesses computed from a collection of 3170 prehistoric teeth with those observed in the teeth of 80 recent skulls it is concluded that the evolution of the dentition of Pongo pygmaeus follows behind the evolution of the human dentition along parallel lines. The data on which this conclusion has been based are set out in a Simpson diagram in fig 1 (with accompanying text in English).
