Abstract: Over the last economic cycle, temporary agency work has increasingly developed into an instrument of strategic corporate governance. By permanently employing temporary agency workers management aims at both protecting future profits against market risks and increasing current returns. Furthermore, as a side effect of the changed deployment of temporary agency work, a new competition-oriented mode of regulation of work is established that is based on an altered role of central institutions of labour relations. Previously, sector agreements and legal dismissal protection set boundaries for the competition among workers, currently these institutions are much less embedded in employers’ practices and thus increasingly become objects of competition.
