Abstract: Within lean production systems, restructuring processes are being implemented rather in small steps and in the context of continuous improvement (kaizen). However, in such processes employees often find themselves torn between standardization and innovativeness. On the one hand, monotonous standardized work processes are demanded. On the other hand, employees are required to question and optimize those standardizations as a part of continuous improvement. So far mostly ergonomic consequences have been considered as an outcome of this dilemma. Psychic stress has often been overlooked. Therefore, the following article will mainly discuss psychic stress caused by restructuring processes and proposes a way to include these by combining a set of existing approaches of labour research.
