Abstract: Interactions between legal minimum wages and collective bargained wages have come into the focus of comparative research only recently. Due to the segmentation of the collective bargaining system we will show that the introduction of the legal minimum wage created different types of interaction in Germany. Especially in sectors with a low wage level the minimum wage becomes dominant. If collective bargaining coverage and negotiated wages are high, the legal minimum wage doesn’t matter. But there are also sectors where the legal minimum wage has become a point of reference for the increase of collective bargained wages, in order to fix the lowest wage groups (slightly) above the minimum wage level. As the aggregate of collectively negotiated wages directly influences the future increase of the minimum wage in Germany, an explicit interaction is generated here.
