Abstract: The introduction and use of technologies also creates new challenges, some of them field-specific, in the social sector. These can be seen, for example, in sheltered workshops (“Werkstätten”) for people with disabilities, a large section with around 730 facilities throughout Germany and more than 310,000 employee-like workers to ensure their participation in work. With its specific triple mandate of rehabilitation, inclusion and profitability, this sector is to a large extent confronted with the dilemma between individualised care, efficient production and placing workers on the general labour market. Based on a case study in a sheltered workshop, field-specific interpretations, challenges and ways of dealing with digital transformation processes are described and related to the triple mandate under conditions of digitalization or technologization.
