Abstract:
The digital transformation of work is not technologically determined but the result of a complex socio-technical process of negotiation and designing – it can be shaped by labour policy. The research questions put emphasis on two aspects of the socio-technical process of transformation: the status of implementation of Industry 4.0 in industrial enterprises in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the effects of qualification measures for works councils as an instrument which enables them to shape the process of change. Following the idea of exploratory significance testing, quantitative results build the foundation from which hypotheses are deduced to be tested as a-priori hypotheses in following studies. As it had already been the case with the study “Industry 4.0: Participate – co-create. Status of implementation in industrial enterprises in North Rhine-Westphalia” published by the Forschungsinstitut für gesellschaftliche Weiterentwicklung (FGW), the database consists of 144 works councils, 137 employees and 52 directors out of 51 industrial enterprises in North Rhine-Westphalia.
