Abstract:
Returning to work is often a critical process. Being crucial for affected employees themselves, the local organization of work is irritated, too. Therefore, supervisors are challenged to manage resulting effects. Due to a lack of operational guidelines of processes of return to work, zones of indeterminacy appear that managers have to fill. Taking the example of return to the workplace after mental illness, it is examined how they deal with these zones of indeterminacy and how they affect occupational reintegration. Based on problem-centered interviews with supervisors it will be shown that they take the function of gatekeepers, acting in a field between economic and social demands. Whether they focus on successful reintegration or on economically oriented crisis management is a question of organizational circumstances and individual attitudes.
