Abstract: This article shows for the chemical industry as an example that the challenges of digital transformation can be mastered by the employees’ professional agency. Although chemical industry is characterized by a comparatively high degree of automation and networking, experiential knowledge keeps playing a major role. Based on empirical data, digitalization-related development processes in organization and manufacturing are presented and the limits of digitization are addressed. A special focus is placed on the interpretations and coping strategies of employees in the context of the introduction of new technologies in production.
