Abstract:
The goal of the paper is to provide a concise overview of the main environmental challenges of East Asia, to highlight the regional level of cooperation in tackling environmental problems and to point at the main issues permeating climate change debate in the region. In South East Asia, the major environmental problems represent hazy and toxic air, burning forests, poisoned water, unsafe food and congested roads have become commonplace. In Northeast Asia, it is air pollution that causes a serious transboundary problem with spillovers of political tension among neighbors. Scale of economic impact together with perceptions of international justice belong to major factors hampering more effective environmental cooperation at regional level. In addition to regional environmental issues, the study brings attention also to undergoing changes in global environmental leadership with regard to US Pulling out of the Paris Climate Change deal.
