Abstract: Disillusioned with the outcome of the second London Conference the British reverted to UN discussions as the pretext for military action. Anthony Eden, Selwyn Lloyd and John Foster Dulles discussed the topic on 20 September 1956, Lloyd arguing for a UN Security Council meeting as early as possible and Dulles asking for a delayed approach. Britain had finally decided to pursue the military option at the expense of Anglo-American agreement. Because of weather conditions and troop morale the operation “Musketeer revise” could not be implemented after the end of October. The decision to launch the operation was required by the 20th. If Britain heeded Dulles’s wishes, the Security Council’s endorsement of the British position and Parliamentary sanction for military action might not be arranged by then. Now that Britain was considering going it alone with the French, the old problem was revived: could London and Paris proceed without Tel Aviv?
