Abstract: The complexity of international situation and diplomacy in the inter-war period is also illustrated by the steps of France´s foreign policy. As the winning power after the World War I, it was barely as strong as it could have seemed. It attempted to eliminate its “weaknesses” by means of agreements with the Great Britain, surrounding countries, or at the League of Nations. International politics did not favour these activities of France. The economic crisis, that hit France as well, and Hitler´s coming to power in Germany, eventually resulted in French diplomacy negotiating treaties with the USSR. However, agreements from the 20´s and the 30´s did not influence the development in Europe significantly – the policy of appeasement was decisive.
