Abstract:
Governments and international organizations impose sanctions to try to change the strategic choices of international relations actors that threaten their interests or violate international standards of behavior. These are measures by which a country can respond to policy challenges and developments that run counter to its goals and values. Critics say that sanctions are often poorly designed and rarely successful in changing the goal, while fans say they have become more effective in recent years and remain a fundamental tool of foreign policy. The article introduces economic sanctions as an important tool of foreign policy with regard to their historical justification and effectiveness.
