Abstract:
The Part 3 of this study analyzes Sino-Indian relations within the triangular relationship with Pakistan in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1971 third Indo-Pakistan war occurred, with consequence of dissolution of Pakistan. Due to rapprochement with the US China gained its place in the UN Security Council. India’s response to the new global status of China came in the form of its first nuclear test in 1974 and with annexation of Sikkim. To India’s nuclear test China responded with a secret agreement with Pakistan on cooperation in nuclear domain. In 1976 China and India renewed diplomatic relations on the ambassadorial level. In 1984 India secured Siachen glacier and thus contested the Sino-Pakistani border agreement. The 1980s were relatively calm period, which culminated in Rajiv Gadhi’s visit to Beijing and Islamabad in December 1988, which marked the beginning of normalization of relations.
