Slovak Women in Politics till the End of the Dzurinda´s Government and the Possible Reasons for Low Women’s Political Participation

Abstract: Author is dealing with the participation of women in Slovak politics throught data and theory. She is trying to find the explanation, why Slovakia “is still not able” to consider woman as politician without pointing out her gender. Women make up about half the human population and the half of Slovak citizens as well. The National Council of Slovak Republic consists of 150 seats and only 22 of them belonged to women representatives till the era of Mikulaš Dzurinda Government (1998-2006). When expressing in percentage, it was about 15 % female politicians in Slovak Parliament and from 14 ministerial seats in government, just the only 1 seat belonged to woman, to the Minister for Labour, Social Affairs and Family, to Iveta Radicova. In the 2005, she became the first women in Slovak Government after the year 1998. Women’s political activity depends greatly on their living conditions. We have to take into account the “public environment” which influences the possibility to enter the public institutions for women.
