Abstract: Ongoing dynamic changes in the political, economic, social, environmental and, last but not least, global and regional security environment, together with declining stability and predictability of future developments, called on the Member States of the European Union to unite their efforts and make Europe a stronger, more efficient and effective provider of security and defence. Therefore, the author, using relevant security research methods, examines selected aspects of the EU's security and defence policy in the article and points out the fact that despite the promotion of EU principles based on the concept of the so-called soft power, it is for the EU essential to invest to its security and defence and have sufficient military capabilities and capacities in its own interest.
