Abstract: After the 2019 general election, the Swiss party system has undergone a fundamental change. After many decades, the proportions in the lower house of the Swiss parliament have changed significantly. In fact, two green political parties achieved significant success. Together, the two parties took a fifth of the seats in the National Council. The aim of this paper is to identify the main reasons for the electoral success of the two Green parties, but also to explain the main differences that distinguish the two political parties from each other, given their similar substantive focus. The origins and formation of Swiss Green politics are explained and the basic programmatic background of both parties is presented. The text also points out the differences in the socio-demographic structure of the voters of the two parties under study. The article assumes that climate change and the intense debate on environmental protection, which also influenced the Swiss political discourse, were the main reasons for the success of both political parties.
