Abstract: Is shift work compensated by higher wages? We use matched employer-employee data to show that adjustment is required for self-selection effects and wage formation has to be considered separately for shift work and day work. The findings suggest that there is a substantial wage differential. We evaluate the sensitivity of this differential to various collective bargaining indicators. Collective bargaining, regardless of how it is measured, has a positive influence on the estimated wage differential. This differential effectively compensates employees doing shift work. Their preferences alone would not be enough to convince them to accept shift work. The extra pay significantly influences their choice.
