Regards croisés sur l'économie, 2014, vol. n° 15, issue 2, 197-210

Abstract: Child-related career interruptions contribute to the persistent gender wage gap. We start with reviewing the literature on the family wage gap, which corresponds to the wage penalty associated with childbirth. We then turn to our empirical findings on the impact of work interruptions on men?s and women?s wages in France. As in most industrialized countries, parental leave has a negative effect on wages and corresponding work interruptions explain the greatest part of the wage gap between mothers and childless women. However, a significant wage gap remains unexplained between men and women without career interruptions.
