Abstract:
Our study assesses a quantification of foreign relocations for 1993, 1997 and 2003 through a database of 15,000 establishments of firms above 20 employees. This allows to count recognized facts of foreign relocations. We state that: Foreign relocations are an unusual phenomenon (not even 0.15% of establishments are yearly involved); The decisions for a foreign relocation stem from three different types of strategy (offensive, defensive and structural foreign relocations), and not only from differences in labor costs; At a macroeconomic level, the effects of foreign relocations proved to be balanced because of inward relocations (but on the other hand the former foreign relocations may ease the firms to increase their production abroad: foreign relocation is one of the adjustment variables for the industrial equipment to fit the strategies of firms?globalization).
