Abstract:
The Structure, Conduct, Performance paradigm provides a relevant framework to understand why the Martinique hotel industry underperforms. The strong growth of this market in the early 1990s combined with tax relief for investment in real estate as well as low entry barriers, has led to a low level of concentration in this industry at the end of the decade, fierce price competition, and no product differentiation. The growing competition from Cuba and the Dominican Republic in the late 1990s highlighted the extent of the crisis in the Martinique hotel industry. Understanding its cause, mainly an ill-designed public policy and the firms? erroneous strategic choices, is our contribution to addressing this issue.
