Abstract: The main interest of impact evaluations with experimental methods lies in their ability to measure precisely the effect of a social program when there is no preexisting data and when the theoretical framework is still the subject of many debates. These methods also allow for controlling both observable and unobservable individual characteristics. In the French education system, 14 years old pupils have to find and report on a personal work experience in order to get more familiar with professional life. We have performed an evaluation of the effect of coaching (our policy measure) on the ability to find such a work experience (a performance measure) by the pupils living in underprivileged cities. The experiment was conducted in 6 secondary schools, representing 28 classes and 550 pupils. The small size of our sample showed up differences between the control group and the coached group so that we have used the propensity score method introduced by Rosenbaum and Rubin to balance the samples, and correct the biases.
