Abstract: How relatively painless it was to agree 18 months ago to be nominated for the position of President-Elect of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA). Preparing for this address, the most daunting task faced by holders of this office, has been anything but painless. At the same time I can say unequivocally that it has been a productive exercise for me. I hope that something I say will make your time spent listening worthwhile as well.
