Impact of emerging technologies on the sustainability of educational gamification: a literature review

Abstract: Emerging technologies have demonstrated their capacity to transform educational processes and foster sustainable practices. However, technical, cultural, and organizational barriers persist, limiting their effective application and scalability, which underscores the importance of investigating their implications in depth. The purpose of this article is to explore how emerging technologies contribute to the sustainability of educational gamification, identifying both effective patterns and challenges documented in the literature. This analysis seeks to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding current dynamics and offering practical recommendations for future developments in the field. The methodology used combines a hermeneutic qualitative approach with a systematic literature review. Relevant studies published in recent years, selected from high-impact academic databases, were analyzed, allowing for the identification of thematic connections and critical gaps in existing research. The results show that emerging technologies enhance motivation and engagement in educational settings, although they face limitations related to a lack of longitudinal studies, cultural disconnection, and technological gaps. In conclusion, it is highlighted that maximizing the impact of gamification requires interdisciplinary and adaptive approaches that respond to contextual needs and promote long-term educational sustainability.
