Abstract:
This paper uses the structural break method to analyze inflation dynamics in China between 1987 and 2008. The analysis detected some breakpoints that occurred before 1994 and an additional breakpoint that occurred in 2002; these breakpoints have not been identified in any of the existing literature. Furthermore, this paper shows that the structural break in 2002 seems consistent with the Chinese government's policy of eliminating inefficiency in state-owned enterprises.
