Work-terms and success in postsecondary education

Economics Bulletin, 2017, vol. 37, issue 1, 180-189

Abstract: Co-op work-terms, which are more and more popular, can be treated as an alternative source of funding for postsecondary education. In this study we explore the relationship between mechanisms for financing studies in general—and income from co-op work-terms in particular—on the one hand, and success at university on the other hand. To do this we estimate a Tobit model with instrumental variables using data collected at the University of Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada). Our results demonstrate that income from co-op work-terms positively affects educational success. However, the experience acquired during work-terms seems to contribute more than the associated financial resources.
