The impact of longer school days on mothers' and children's labor force participation

Abstract: Extending the school day has been one of the key elements of public education reform in Brazil and several other Latin American countries in recent years. We investigated the impact of a policy that financed the extension of school schedules from half to full days in Brazil on different maternal and child labor participation outcomes. Using a regression discontinuity design, we did not find any significant impact of increasing the length of the daily school schedule on mothers' or children's labor decisions.
