Abstract: The study attempts to explore whether and to what extent occupational gender segregation affects average earning difference between male and female informal sector workers in India. A decomposition exercise is undertaken in order to examine the relative roles of gender segregation across occupations and within-occupation earning differentials in explaining overall average gender earning gap. Results show that male and female workers are highly segregated irrespective of rural and urban regions. Within-occupation earning differences, not gender segregation, contribute to the bulk of gender earning differentials in India's informal sector.
