Abstract: This article reports on the results of a study that focused on the assessment of the phonological awareness of students in the Moroccan East who have difficulty deciphering French. To do this, we developed phonological awareness tests aimed at the different abilities related to this skill that we administered to students identified as having difficulties with reading through a diagnostic evaluation they had. The statistical analysis of the results allowed us to conclude that this category of students suffers from a deficiency of phonological awareness, in particular concerning the decomposition capacities of oral statements in lexical units, as well as those relating to segmentation and fusion of syllables and phonemes. We have also found statistically significant correlations between general phonological awareness and decryption performance, which supports the results of many research studies conducted in this area in other teaching / learning contexts.
