Abstract:
The thermal stability of a horizontal fluid layer in its transient conduction mode is studied. The critical Rayleigh numbers which characterise the onset of convection are determined using linear stability theory. The fluid is heated internally by absorption of the external radiation penetrating downwards into the fluid. The effects of optical thickness and boundary conditions are also investigated.
