Abstract:
One aspect of heat pump design which has received considerable attention recently is capacity control. In this paper, the performance of a capacity controlled heat pump has been compared with that of a conventional fixed speed system. It has been found that the capacity modulated system, with a speed reduction limitation of half the rated compressor speed, can offer more than 10 per cent improvement in energy utilisation efficiency over the conventional system. An optimised microprocessor controlled unit, using a compressor with a wider speed variation capability, can offer improvements in efficiency as high as 30 per cent compared with on/off controlled systems.
