Convective heat-transfer coefficients: The colour-change paint technique

K. Jambunathan, R.J. Edwards and B.L. Button

Applied Energy, 1987, vol. 28, issue 2, 137-152

Abstract: The colour/phase change paint technique requires the determination of transient conduction characteristics of the test specimen in order to obtain convective heat-transfer coefficients. In an attempt to define and optimise the relevant variables, a parametric study has been conducted using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. Five factors affecting the accuracy of the technique have been identified, leading to a minimum error in the estimated values. The technique has been applied to natural convection on a heated flat plate facing downward in water. The results are compared with existing data, errors quantified and specimen parameters established to obtain reliable data.
