Abstract: In this paper, optimized controls to enhance the energy efficiency and demand response benefits of roof-integrated switchable insulation system combined with precooling strategies are evaluated for office buildings. A wide range of optimal cost functions are investigated to evaluate the total building energy saving as well as electrical peak demand shedding and shifting potentials. The results indicate that roof-integrated switchable insulation systems provide modest reductions even when optimally controlled of up to 5% and 4% savings in total building’s energy use and electrical peak demand during a peak day. However, when precooling strategies are integrated with roof switchable insulation systems, optimal controls can enhance the performance of office buildings by reducing total energy use by up to 19% and electrical peak demand by up to 34%. Moreover, the analysis presented in this study demonstrated that roof-integrated SIS combined with precooling strategies offer significant potential to shape the energy demand profiles for grid-interactive efficient building (GEB) applications when optimized controls are deployed.
