Heat-discharge characteristics of a finned heat-exchanger immersed in a hot-water store

Applied Energy, 1989, vol. 34, issue 3, 165-179

Abstract: The thermal discharge from a hot-water store by means of an externally-finned, heat-exchanger coil, stretching throughout almost the whole depth of the water in the store, has been investigated. Cold water enters the lowest part of the heat-exchanger, is heated and conveyed away from the uppermost part, thereby extracting heat from the hot-water store. This process has been modelled mathematically and observed experimentally. The greater the degree of stratification that occurs in the hot-water store, the higher the heat-extraction rate that can be achieved.
