Occupant response to the indoor climate in super-insulated homes with heat recovery

Applied Energy, 1990, vol. 35, issue 4, 245-252

Abstract: As part of an EEC demonstration project into the benefits of improved insulation in the UK, four super-insulated and eight control houses have been built. The project was initiated by the Energy Design Group and the Research in Building Group of the Polytechnic of Central London, who have also carried out extensive monitoring of the houses. The super-insulated houses were constructed from components imported from Finland where high standards of insulation are the norm. These are heated by a warm air system, incorporating a heat recovery unit with top-up heat provided by a water-to-air heat exchanger supplied from a Cormorant thermal store charged by a gas boiler. The thermal store also supplies mains pressure domestic hot water. The conventional radiator system, again fed from a Cormorant, provided heating and hot water in the control houses. To investigate the occupants' opinion of the thermal conditions provided in the houses, a questionnaire was administered to the occupants.
