Effectiveness of high-power chargers at a quick-Charging Station for electric vehicles

Abstract: The widespread use of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates the establishment of charging facilities. DC-type chargers, called quick chargers, are generally positioned along travel routes to replenish energy shortfalls. The global deployment of high-power chargers (e.g., 350 kW) aligns with increasing EV battery capacities. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of high-power chargers. A charging station evaluation model, developed based on the charging histories of a charging station in Japan, enables the verification of the charge amount supplied to EVs according to the number and output power of the chargers. The results revealed a limited number of EVs benefitting from high-power chargers. Moreover, the output power of the chargers and the state of charge (SoC) at the start of charging influence the charge amount. Accordingly, this study proposes an efficient operational strategy for high-power chargers, involving the selection of a charger with an appropriate output according to the EV battery capacity and SoC upon arrival at the charging station. The proposed strategy can potentially reduce investment costs associated with charging infrastructure and improve the charging service for EV users, promoting a more economically viable and sustainable charging ecosystem.
