Thermal-design data for evaporators of ORC engines utilising low-temperature heat sources

Applied Energy, 1990, vol. 37, issue 2, 138 pages

Abstract: Abundant quantities of hot water at temperatures between 60 and 100°C are available as the waste streams from many industrial and power-producing plants. An ORC engine can be employed to produce mechanical work by utilising this hot water as the source of energy input. A computer routine has been coded in order to evaluate the design characteristics for the evaporator of the Rankine engine considered when using any of the suitable organic working fluids selected. Another routine has been composed in order to facilitate the prediction of the off-design-point performance of the evaporator. In this paper, the mathematical models employed are outlined and samples of the derived data presented as graphs. The programs, or the charts representing their outputs, could be useful aids in designing and optimising the performances of evaporators of ORC engines for the application envisaged, as well as for other energy-conversion systems.
