Multi-week continuous-time scheduling of integrated electricity and natural gas system against long-lasting stressful weather

Abstract: Increasing climate events have aroused worldwide attention on carbon neutrality, which significantly promotes the development of renewables, yet unfortunately, the high share of renewables dramatically increases the difficulty for power systems in dealing with stressful weather. This paper proposes a novel multi-week continuous-time scheduling strategy for an integrated electricity and natural gas system against long-lasting stressful weather. The proposed scheduling method incorporates an extended horizon to account for multi-week energy sufficiency and introduces continuous-time modeling for intra-period details and gas dynamics. Temporal decomposition for continuous-time modeling is developed to efficiently solve the established problem, where solution space transformation is first applied for reformulation from function space to algebraic space, and progressive hedging is then developed to break the scheduling horizon into multiple sub-horizons for parallel calculation. Case studies validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the experiment results show that in the two adopted test systems, 1) by coordinating linepack gas storage and battery energy storage, the wind curtailment and the load shedding get reduced by 84.89% and 100%, respectively; 2) through CT optimization, the average real-time power regulation decreases by 72.33% and the total operation cost gets reduced by 1.01%; 3) the proposed algorithm shows an 86.89% reduction in computational time at the cost of no more than 0.2% increase in the total cost.
