Abstract:
A novel concept for the operation of a liquid desiccant domestic-dehumidifier has been proposed: the resulting developed system dehumidifies air by passing it directly over a liquid desiccant. The system is novel in two respects: first, a bubble pump is used to both reconcentrate the desiccant as well as pump it around the system; secondly, air is drawn through the device by natural convection, rather than mechanical ventilation. Thus, the system can be powered by a high-temperature heat source alone, thereby avoiding the use of electricity. This proof-of-concept system has been constructed and tested in a humid environment: it has a dehumidification rate of approximately 800 ml/day for a power input of 235 W from a gas burner. This experimental project confirms the feasibility of the proposed dehumidification concept, and suggests that the performance of the system could be improved substantially as a result of further developments. The inherent simplicity, absence of moving parts, and quietness of operation are the system's main advantages.
