Thermodynamic limitations on heat exchanger performance

Martin E. Weber

Applied Energy, 1979, vol. 5, issue 2, 159-164

Abstract: The limitations on heat exchanger performance imposed by the second law of thermodynamics are derived using the effectiveness-number of transfer units method. For any geometrical configuration (e.g. crossflow, multipass) the limitation on flow rate for a fixed duty can be obtained.
