Re-inventing the wheel-barrow

S. D. Probert

Applied Energy, 1981, vol. 8, issue 4, 315 pages

Abstract: Unfortunately, on many occasions we appear to ignore or forget the basic principles of good design. For example, the wheel-barrow, as commonly found in the [`]western' world, is far more energy dissipative per unit pay-load per metre travelled than the Chinese-type wheel-barrow of more than 1700 years ago. Thus an [`]energy-conscious', good lateral stability design of wheel-barrow is proposed and some of the factors that might inhibit its adoption for production are discussed.
