Abstract: This paper uses a static magnetic field under the influence of relative phase to control optical properties and switch behavior in a V-type degenerate two-level atomic medium. The magnetic field is used as a “knob” to manipulate the optical bistability and multistability behavior through the probe field absorption and dispersion spectral control. In particular, we can easily swap bistability for multistability and vice versa by turning on/off or changing the magnetic field strength in the appropriate phase regions. Moreover, high-efficiency magneto-optical switching can be constructed via magnetic field modulation based on optical bistability behavior. The results in the model may be used for optical logic gates, single/multi-channel switching, and optical computing applications.
