Abstract:
Spiral waves are self-sustaining regimes in active excitable media. The multi-arm spiral wave consists of a number of spiral waves with the same chirality and a common core. Such spiral waves can lose their stable pattern via symmetry loss or via break-up when new spiral waves emerge. If break-up occurs in the heart muscle, it underlies dangerous cardiac rhythm disturbances such as fibrillation. The present paper concerns problems of pattern stability and wave period estimation for the multi-arm spiral waves.
