Abstract:
Identifying whether there are innovation convergence clubs within urban agglomerations and their driving factors is crucial to achieving coordinated development of regional economies. Existing literature focuses on improving innovation performance, and there is insufficient research on innovation convergence within urban agglomerations. Based on the city data from 2010 to 2018, this paper identifies and analyzes the innovation convergence clubs and driving factors of the top five urban agglomerations in China. The empirical results show that there are four innovation convergence clubs within the top five urban agglomerations in China. The members of Club 1 and Club 2 are core cities and major satellite cities, and the members of Club 3 and Club 4 are edge cities. The empirical results of Ordered Logistics show that club formation is influenced by multiple factors. In particular, government R&D efforts and market environment have a significant positive impact on cities moving into high-level clubs.
